The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication and Center for Women’s Studies, IIS (deemed to be University) in collaboration with IDPA (Indian Documentary Producers Association Mumbai) organized an online session in the Dialogue, Screen and Stage series on Tuesday, 3rd August 2021. The topic for the session was “Portrayal of Women in Cinema and TV”. The guest speaker of the session was an eminent German and Indian Cine and Theatre artist, Ms. Suzanne Bernert.
Dr. Ashok Gupta, Chancellor, IIS (deemed to be University) presented welcome address in the starting of the session. The Ms. Bernert commenced the session with sharing about her journey in the Indian Film and TV industry and how she learnt to speak so many languages. She also talked about her perspective about the portrayal of women in cinema and TV. During the session, she mentioned her personal experience of gender biases and how did she dealt with it.
After Ms. Bernert’s address students asked multiple questions including her views about the stereotypical approach in the portrayal of women in TV, objectification of women in Indian Cinema and ads, her role as Sonia Gandhi in the Hindi film ‘The Accidental Prime Minister’ and she answered all of them while satisfying the students’ queries. The session was attended by the students and faculty member of Department of JMC.
