The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication organized a two-day workshop on “Layout and Designing of Newspaper and Magazine” on October 3-4, 2016 at Computer Lab, ISIM Campus. Designing Softwares Coral Draw, Photoshop and Quark Express was taught and practiced during the workshop. It was organized for the students of MA(JMC) Sem I and BA(JMC) Sem III.
The resource person for the workshop was Mr. Satyajeet Talukdar, Group Design Head, National Dunia. In the two-day workshop, students learned to design magazine on Coral Draw, picture editing on Adobe Photoshop and page designing on Quark Xpress.
Adobe Photoshop is the most popular software for editing of pictures. A know how in the same would benefit students in their professional journey. In the workshop Mr Talukdar taught students about the various tools wich are widely used in photoshop such as crop tool, lasso tool, pen tool, etc.
A detailed knowledge of tools and their working in coral draw was given too. Mr. Talikdar disussed about shape tool, line tool, text tool etc which are commonly used in Coral Draw.
QuarkXpress is a software used to design newspaper mostly. Detailed information on how to work with quarkXpress was given to the students. Learning the three most widely used softwares for editing photos and designing magazines and newspapers was essential for students, as they developed new skills after the workshop.
Mr Talukdar also discussed about aesthetic values in editing of photos, designing pages of magazine and newspapers. He said it is very important to design in a way which is not just pleasing to the eyes but in a way that also catches attention of the viewers. In a time when most things are highly commercial, you have to work in a way that catches people’s attention in a millisecond. Learning these softwares and using them effectively will help you win, when you step into the professional world.
The information and techniques of using the softwares and aesthetic values to designing helped students gain a very deep knowledge about editing and designing pictures and pages of magazine and newspapers.
Last day, prints of the final pages designed by the students were taken and exhibited. It boosted the students’ moral.
