Objective: 

Course Objectives:

This course will enable the students to understand the concept, types and models of development. Understand the basics various programmes and policies of development run by government at state and center level. Understand the role of media in development of a nation.

Development communication: Concept of Development, Indicators of Development, Role of communication in Development. Development, Media and Ideology: Maxsist, Mixed Economy, Gandhian Approach and Capitalism.

Psychological Theories: Selective Exposure, Selective Perception and Selective Retention.

Unit II: 

Development Journalism: Need and Relevance, International Initiatives of Development: IPDC, Las Banos Initiative, UNDP, UNICEF, UNESCO and African/ Asian Development Bank. Sustainable Development. Media’s role in Social Inclusiveness: Women and Children.

Unit III: 

Health: New diseases and Epidemics. WHO guidelines, new research institutes like NARI, NCCS, NIV etc. Weather and agriculture- Importance of weather,  Impact of monsoon on economy, Green Revolution, need for Evergreen Revolution, Genetically Modified (GM) seeds, Seed banks, Irrigation and land use.

Environment: Pollution, Global warming and climate change- its effects, ecological footprint, role of NGOs, bio-diversity. Energy: Growing need of energy, conventional and non-conventional sources of energy, controversies, regulatory authorities.

Issues in development: Urban and rural development, water and waste management, education, employment. Reporting Development Stories: Skills and techniques for Print, Broadcast and Online. Data Journalism: Nature, Scope and Sources. Data Analysis Techniques.
