Objective: 

Course Objectives: 

This course will enable the students to understand the various laws related to media prevailing in India.  Understand the media ethics and pressure on media. Understand the role of media in society and their accountability.

Fundamental rights – freedom of speech and expression

and their limits – directive principles of state policy. History of press laws in India, Broadcasting Act

Contempt of Court, Defamation, Parliamentary Privileges, Official Secrets Act, Press and Registration Act.

Unit III: 

Working Journalist Act 1955, Copyright Act, Press Council Act, Indecent Representation of Women Act, Cinematograph Act, and Cable Television Act; intellectual property right Act

Unit IV: 

Ethical problems including privacy, Right to reply, Objectionable writing; Yellow Journalism, Trial by Media. Central Board of Film Certification.

Unit V: 

Right to Information, cyber laws, Media and public interest litigation, Accountability and independence of media. IT ACT 2000: its strength, limitations.
